Bristol-based tribute band JAM Factory are performing a fundraising gig in aid of Help Bristol’s Homeless at the SouthBank Club in Dean Lane, Southville on Saturday 23 November 2024 The band play high-energy, up-tempo 1970s and 80s hits by Paul Weller’s group The Jam, plus other Mod and New Wave classics from acts like The Who, The Clash, The Small Faces and Spencer Davis Group.

It star's Barabara Stanwyck as a beautiful young missionary and a Swedish actor, Nils Asther (in yellow face) as a cruel general who befriends her.

The film is a suspenseful British film noir from 1960 and stars John Gregson. A successful businessman (Gregson) is blinded on the same day his wife plans to leave him. She elects to look after him but he is a very bad patient. Faces in the Dark is adapted from the same team writers who brought us Vertigo and Les Diabolique. Murder, My Sweet (1944) stars Dick Powell, Claire Trevor and Anne Shirley, and was directed by Edward Dmytryk. It was the film that turned Dick Powell from a song and dance man, popular in light comedy musicals, into a hard-boiled character player.

For a film from the team of Tyrone Power and Edmund Goulding: Nightmare Alley (1947) is unusual in that film noir, at this time, was essentially thought of as 'B' movie material. Yet this one gets top billing and a big budget. It is a dark tale of sociopathic obsession in the tacky world of sideshows and carnivals: a new-comer becomes fixated on a mind-reading act and determines to steal it and take it up-market.

Directed by Maurice Elvey and starring Ivor Novello, this rom-com provided an early role for a slim, young Jack Hawkins (playing a cockney loudmouth). It is a well-crafted comedy, full of astute observation and tells the story of an illegitimate son of a Russian woman, who is the result of an affair that she had with Czar Nicholas II (or at least that’s his story).

Our next screening (on Sunday Feb 11) is a real lost classic of comic (!) Italian neo-realism from 1960. Adua e le compagne (or Adua and Her Friends aka Hungry for Love) was directed by Antonio Pietrangeli and stars Simone Signore and Marcello Mastroianni. It was voted Best Italian film of the year in 1960 and won the Silver Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival. Falling unemployed, thanks to the 1958 Merlin Law closing all the brothels in Italy, four former prostitutes open a restaurant on the outskirts of Rome ... with unexpected consequences.

Halcyon (Headline Band) -the Bristol-based quintet Halcyon was formed in 2021 and quickly developed a unique sound in the landscape of the UK modern jazz scene. Mixing elements of avant-garde jazz, funk and experimental prog rock, the band flows between carefully crafted melodies and improvised sections in line with the jazz tradition. After party dance lead by Chiedza, (Headline DJ), hailing from South Africa and with Nepalese roots, DJ Chiedza’s journey into the music world is a vibrant mix of cultural and historic influences.
