The Lost Weekend (1945), was nominated for seven Oscars and won four: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay. Starring Ray Milland and Jane Wyman, it was directed by Billy Wilder. Some argue the impact of its depiction of alcoholism has diminished over the years, but I disagree: its unflinching honesty shocked audiences in 1945 and Milland's award-winning performance (his only Oscar) remains remarkably powerful. It is one of only three films to win both a best picture Oscar and the Grand Prix at Canne (the other two being Marty, 1955 and Parasite, 2019). THIS WEEK 6PM FOR 6.30PM SCREENING.
