Our February screening at SouthBank is The Grapes of Wrath (1940). Starring Henry Fonda, Jane Darwell and John Carradine, the film was directed by John Ford. The screenplay was adapted by Nunnally Johnson and the film benefits hugely from the work of cinematographer Gregg Toland. One of the first films selected in 1989 for preservation by the United States National Film Registry as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant", it won two Academy awards for Best Supporting Actress (Jane Darwell) and Best Director (John Ford).
